Hiya!

Welcome to City Brewed. We’re all about celebrating the life that happens over coffee: morning rituals, fresh-brewed inspiration, and taking a peek inside cafes near and far.

How CEO Emily Weiss Starts Her Day

How CEO Emily Weiss Starts Her Day

I'm firm on a few things: every morning should be enjoyed with a steaming hot brew, every closet needs a go-to white tee, and every boss lady (and guy) out there should know about Emily Weiss, founder of beauty bible Into the Gloss and cult-favorite beauty brand, Glossier (interested yet?).

With a global audience of dedicated readers, Weiss set out to rethink, reclaim, and redefine beauty, and to say she’s done just that would be a complete understatement. Social media may give her access to customers, directly communicating to create the products they truly want (I should know, I buy it all), but social (namely Marie Claire) also gives us eyes into her enviable morning routine, with a beauty regimine we'll surely be copying.

Here's her routine, told to Marie Claire:

7AM I wake up and meditate for at least 10 minutes. This was my New Year's resolution, and I'm trying to stick to it.

7:45AM After that, I jump in the shower and get ready.

7:55AM My whole beauty routine takes about five minutes. I wash my face with Biologique Recherche Cleansing Milk and apply Biologique Recherche Sérum Amniotique E ($67). It's like a vitamin supplement for your skin. Then I put on Glossier Priming Moisturizer. I'm into a bare face with dewy, glowy skin, glossy lashes, and strong brows. No blush. No lipcolor. I start with Glossier Perfecting Skin Tint and Balm Dotcom (an allover skin salve, $12), then I add a coat of Kevyn Aucoin The Volume Mascara ($25) followed by  Benefit Speed Brow ($18). At night, I'll sometimes add a bit of sparkle around my eyes: I like L'Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow in Eternal Black ($9).

8AM Awesome hairstylist Christiaan Houtenbos cut my hair into a mullet-y, '90s Linda Evangelista shag. Because it's so straight and fine, I use Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray ($12) to add a grittier feel and define the layers. Last, I work a drop of Shu Uemura Art of Hair Essence Absolue Nourishing Protective Oil ($68) onto the ends — and done!

8:20AM I walk to Smile To Go in Soho to grab breakfast and an Americano. I'm not necessarily a morning person, so I need that coffee. If I'm feeling responsible, I'll get a fruit cup, or a raspberry scone if I'm feeling decadent.
