How Oakland-Based Artist Aleksandra Zee Starts Her Day
I’m forever inspired by artists like Aleksandra Zee, an Oakland-based woodworker who builds intricate wooden wall hangings that you’ve surely seen on your favorite Instagram feeds. Pulling inspiration from her travels, trips to the desert, and spending time in front of the ocean, Al crafts pieces unlike you’ve ever seen before – and since each piece is custom, you won’t see another like it. I could go on and on talking about the gorgeous attention to detail found in each and every piece, but wouldn’t you rather get an inside look into Al’s day? We're all ears...
8AM Alarm is usually my pup Jack shaking and jingling to wake me up. I throw on a robe and let the little guy out and take some deep present breaths of fresh air.
8:30AM Throw on my Lulu's and head to spin at 9AM. I try to take a spin class at least 6 days a week. Because I run my own business I am constantly answering emails phone calls and texts, and my one hour a day workout is my precious Me time. I put my phone away and all that matters is challenging my body to do the best.
10AM Come home make a quick breakky, feed the pup, and hop in the shower. Right after the shower is my fav time to make a cup of coffee or tea to get me ready for the day. I get ready pretty quickly, because working in the shop is not a glamorous day by any means. Its a t-shirt, jeans, boots, and a jacket every day. :)
10:45AM Shop time. My favorite time. Working the day away, losing track of time. Creating is my breath and my everything. I am so fortunate that I get to do this every day.
4:40PM Possible late afternoon coffee pick me up then back on emails or interviews or artwork planning till about 6PM. Jack hangs with me in the studio all day and gets to run around and be the happiest pup ever all the time.
6PM Yoga or Meditation time to end the day with a home practice.
